What about my personal data?

This is the question we hear most. Here's the honest answer: wipe your device first. Whether your item is refurbished or end-of-life, your data is never accessible after it leaves you.

All storage media is either professionally wiped or physically destroyed under our certified network's data security protocols — refurbished items are wiped, end-of-life items are destroyed. We still recommend wiping your device before drop-off as good practice. Follow the steps below.
1

Back up anything you want to keep

Save photos, documents, and contacts to a new device or cloud storage before wiping.

2

iPhone / iPad

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.

3

Android phone or tablet

Settings → General Management → Reset → Factory Data Reset.

4

Windows laptop or PC

Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Remove Everything.

5

Mac

Apple menu → System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings.

6

Then drop it off

All storage media is professionally wiped or physically destroyed under our certified network's protocols. Your data cannot be accessed or recovered after processing.

FAQs

Is it really free?
Yes — completely free for households and small businesses. TechCollect NZ is funded by the technology brands whose products we collect. There is no cost to you at any point.
Do I need to book or make an appointment?
No booking required. Just walk into any participating Noel Leeming or Warehouse store during normal trading hours and drop your items at the TechCollect collection point.
What happens to my personal data?
We recommend wiping your device before drop-off (see instructions above). Regardless of whether your device is refurbished or recycled, all storage media is professionally wiped or physically destroyed under our certified network's data security protocols. Your data cannot be accessed or recovered after processing.
What actually happens to my device?
We follow the waste hierarchy — reuse and repair come before recycling. Items are assessed by our certified network: if a device has a second life, it is wiped, repaired, and refurbished. Only items that are genuinely end-of-life are recycled for materials recovery. Nothing is sent to landfill or exported to developing countries. All processors are certified to R2v3 or AS/NZS 5377.
Is there a limit to how much I can drop off?
There is no minimum or maximum. Households and small businesses can drop off as much or as little as they like. If you have a large quantity, it's worth calling your nearest store in advance to let them know.
Can I drop off items for my workplace?
Yes — small businesses are welcome to use the free service. For larger commercial volumes, please contact us to discuss the most appropriate option.
Why can't you take TVs?
TVs fall outside our current product scope (WEEE Categories 2, 5, and 6). We are actively investigating options to include them in future. Sign up to our newsletter to be notified when this changes.
