Give your community always-on
e-waste diversion

Certified. Not-for-profit. WMMP-ready. TechCollect NZ provides the infrastructure, the reporting data, and the community reach — so your council can meet its landfill diversion targets without running its own events.

Four outcomes that matter to councils

We designed the TechCollect NZ council partnership around what waste and sustainability officers actually need.

Always-on — not just event days

Communities can access e-waste diversion year-round at 41+ drop-off sites nationwide, including at Warehouse Group and Noel Leeming stores. No scheduling, no logistics burden on your team.

Certified WMMP-ready data

Monthly certified reporting — tonnes diverted, collection sites, product categories — formatted to support your Waste Management and Minimisation Plan progress reporting and waste levy spend accountability. No additional data collection required from your team.

Not-for-profit alignment

TechCollect NZ is a not-for-profit organisation. Our application for registered charitable status has been submitted to Charities Services and is under assessment. This aligns with the community funding philosophy of most council waste minimisation grant rounds.

Regulatory future-proofing

Regulated e-product stewardship for e-products is progressing in NZ. TechCollect NZ has submitted its accreditation application. Councils partnering now will have infrastructure, data, and relationships in place when regulation is enacted.

Rural and regional reach

Our national network reaches communities that often have no other certified e-waste diversion option. For district councils with dispersed populations, this rural reach is especially valuable.

Council co-branding

We actively credit council partners across our communications. Activity in your district is co-branded — the national coordination is invisible, but the local diversion, local jobs, and local data are very real.

Why one-off events are not enough

Many councils run e-waste drop-off events. TechCollect NZ does not replace them — it fills the 364 days a year when no event is running.

Capability Council e-waste event days TechCollect NZ always-on
Community access 1-4 days per year ✓ Every day, year-round
Certified data for WMMP Variable, event-dependent ✓ Monthly certified reporting
Rural and regional access ✗ Usually urban-centred 41+ sites nationally
Council resource required ✗ Significant — logistics, staffing, promotion ✓ Minimal — we handle operations
Cost to community ✓ Free to residents ✓ Free to residents
AS/NZS 5377 certification Depends on contractor ✓ Scheme standard
Regulatory positioning ✗ No scheme accreditation ✓ Accreditation application progressing
Already running e-waste event days? TechCollect NZ complements them — not replaces them. Your events remain community milestones. We provide the always-on infrastructure between them, extending the impact of your investment year-round.

The national backdrop you're working within

Understanding the policy environment helps frame why TechCollect NZ matters now, not later.

NZ Waste Strategy (2025)

Sets national goals to reduce per-capita waste, increase recycling rates, and support a circular economy. Councils must align their six-year WMMPs with this national direction — and e-waste diversion is increasingly a listed priority.

Waste Management and Minimisation Plans

All territorial authorities must maintain a WMMP reviewed every six years. Certified e-waste diversion data from TechCollect NZ feeds directly into WMMP progress reporting and waste levy accountability.

Waste Minimisation Fund

Government funding has faced significant cuts — $177.7 million over four years, with criteria broadened to include freshwater catchment work. Certified outcomes are more important than ever when competing for available funding.

Regulated E-Product Stewardship

NZ's regulated scheme is progressing. TechCollect NZ has submitted its accreditation application as the national scheme manager. Councils partnering now will already have compliant infrastructure and data when regulation is enacted.

The pathway from enquiry to partnership

1

Initial conversation

We discuss your council's specific waste priorities, WMMP context, and existing e-waste activity. No two councils are the same — we tailor the partnership to your district's needs.

2

Review existing e-waste data

We provide a snapshot of current e-waste volumes being diverted through TechCollect NZ in your district or region, at no cost. This helps you understand the baseline before committing.

3

Partnership or funding arrangement

We discuss the most appropriate partnership structure — whether that is a direct funding arrangement, a council waste levy grant, or a referral to alternative funding pathways including the MfE Waste Minimisation Fund.

4

Ongoing certified reporting

Monthly data on tonnes diverted, collection sites, and product categories — formatted for your WMMP reporting. Your council is credited in our communications. The infrastructure runs itself.

Questions councils ask us most

"We already run e-waste events — we have this covered."
Occasional events are a great start, but they cannot provide always-on community access or generate the consistent certified data needed for WMMP reporting. TechCollect NZ complements your existing events — we provide the year-round infrastructure between them, extending the impact of your investment and giving your community access every day of the year.
"Our funding round requires a registered charity number."
TechCollect NZ has submitted its application for registered charitable status and is under assessment by Charities Services. We're happy to discuss provisional applications or deferred funding arrangements. Let us know your timeline and we'll work with it.
"We prefer to fund local or regional providers, not a national scheme."
TechCollect NZ is a national scheme with local impact. All e-waste collected in your district is handled by certified local and regional recycling partners — the national coordination layer is invisible to the community, but the local diversion, local jobs, and local data are very real. We actively credit council partners and co-brand activity in your district.
"Our waste levy budget is fully committed."
We understand budget constraints are real. We'd welcome a conversation about a future funding cycle, a pilot partnership, or alternative funding pathways including the MfE Waste Minimisation Fund. In the meantime, we're happy to provide data on existing e-waste volumes in your district at no cost.
"We're waiting to see what happens with regulated product stewardship."
Regulated product stewardship is progressing. TechCollect NZ has submitted its accreditation application and the independent assessment is complete. Councils partnering with us now will have the data, infrastructure, and relationships already in place when regulation arrives. Waiting means starting from zero when the clock is already ticking.
